Give Yourself The Whitest Smile!
Best Family Dentistry in Charlotte, NC
A beautiful smile is truly a gift! One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “What’s the best way to whiten my teeth?” Like most things in dentistry, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
Most whitening products fall into four main categories:
- Whitening toothpaste
- Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening kits
- Professional custom trays made by your dentist
- In-office whitening
Let’s break down the pros and cons of each option.
1. Whitening Toothpaste
Whitening toothpastes have become popular over the past two decades. To qualify as “whitening,” most contain additional abrasive ingredients to scrub away surface stains.
- Pros: Widely available, inexpensive, and easy to use daily.
- Cons: This is the
least effective method of whitening. Some products, such as charcoal toothpaste, are too abrasive for long-term use and may cause enamel wear. If you have sensitive teeth, use these products with caution and avoid prolonged use.
2. Over-the-Counter Whitening Kits
OTC products such as Crest White Strips can provide a modest and affordable improvement.
- Pros: Effective for mild stain removal, easy to find in stores, and a good option if you’re happy with your current tooth shade but want a subtle enhancement.
- Cons: Messy application, limited whitening strength, and results can vary. Expiration dates are critical—products lose effectiveness if expired or stored in warm environments. Always check before using.
3. Professional Custom Trays
Custom trays made by your dentist are my preferred choice for most patients. They allow the most control and provide excellent results—even for tougher cases, such as dark discoloration from childhood antibiotic use.
At Ayrsley Family Dentistry, the cost for custom trays (upper and lower arches) plus two weeks of whitening solution is $355. We offer both 15% and 20% strength options to fit patient needs. For those who want an even brighter result or have more significant discoloration, additional whitening solution can be purchased at a cost lower than most drugstore kits.
- Pros: Best balance of cost, effectiveness, and control; customizable strength; reusable trays.
- Cons: Requires a dentist visit and daily use at home for 1–2 weeks to achieve full results.
4. In-Office Whitening
In-office whitening, sometimes called “power whitening,” is available at many dental offices, including ours.
- Pros: Fastest results—ideal if you need whiter teeth quickly for a wedding, photos, or a big event.
- Cons: Most expensive option, typically causes the most post-treatment sensitivity, and results may require follow-up at home to maintain.
The Bottom Line
There’s no universal “best” way to whiten—just the option that fits your needs, goals, and budget. For most patients, professional custom trays strike the best balance of cost, comfort, and effectiveness. But whether you’re looking for a quick boost or a long-term brightening plan, we can help you find the solution that works for you.
