An Insight of Practicing Dentistry for 20 Years

Best Family Dentistry in Charlotte, NC

I love my job. Like, I really love it. After 20 years of practicing dentistry, you might think I’d be tired of teeth by now. After all, teeth haven’t changed much—they look pretty much the same as those found on cavemen skulls. You’d think my world would feel small, boring, and repetitive. But here’s the truth: it’s not.

And the reason why is simple—technology.

The dentistry I practice today looks nothing like what I learned in dental school. Back then, we were working with big, clunky silver fillings that left teeth looking metallic and dark. Taking impressions meant filling a patient’s entire mouth with cold, foul-tasting putty and crossing our fingers that the impression came out accurate. X-rays were a process too—you’d take the shot, head into a darkroom, dip film into chemicals, and pray you captured the right image.

And let’s talk about root canals. When I was a student, root canals were stressful enough that I had an ongoing conversation with Jesus while hoping to open a tooth and find an easy case.

Fast forward to today—my world as a dentist is completely different, and my patients’ experiences are better than ever.

Modern Dentistry Looks Different

  • Tooth-Colored Fillings – Gone are the days of large, ugly silver fillings. Today, we use beautiful, tooth-colored composite fillings that bond directly to your natural tooth structure. They’re stronger, more durable, and blend in seamlessly with your smile.
  • Digital Scanning – Forget the trays of putty that made you gag. With advanced intraoral cameras and digital scanners, we can capture highly accurate 3D images of your teeth in seconds—no mess, no discomfort, and better results.
  • Digital X-Rays – Instead of waiting for film to develop, digital X-rays give us instant images with far less radiation exposure than old-fashioned methods. It’s safer, quicker, and more precise.
  • 3D Radiography – This technology has completely transformed complex procedures like root canals and dental implants. Before I even pick up a dental instrument, I know exactly how many canals a tooth has, what potential complications might exist, and the full extent of any infection. This reduces guesswork and makes treatment more predictable and successful.

Why Technology Matters for Your Smile

Dental technology isn’t just about making my job easier—it’s about making your experience as a patient better, safer, and more comfortable. Treatments that used to be intimidating or painful are now faster and less stressful. With modern tools, we can catch problems earlier, plan treatments with precision, and help you achieve healthier, more natural-looking results.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety

I know many people fear the dentist because of past bad experiences—whether it was uncomfortable impressions, long procedures, or outdated tools. If that’s you, I want you to know that dentistry today is not what it used to be.

Modern dentistry is gentler, more efficient, and designed with your comfort in mind. From tooth-colored restorations to digital imaging and advanced pain management techniques, our goal is to change the way you think about dental visits.
